As originally announced back in November we’ve found out today that Windows Messenger will be turned off March 15th. We will continue to run the MSN transport until such time as the servers stop working.

Overnight downtime

The service was down overnight due to a server overloading. We’re investigating this to make sure it does not happen again. All services are now up and available again.

Service downtime & host migration

There will some downtime of an estimated duration of two hours later this evening. This is because the Jabber server is being migrated to updated hardware.

Update: 2011-12-12 15:00 – This has been pushed back until today.

Update 2011-12-12 17:30 – Server has been migrated to new hardware. All working as before

Service Restart

The server was suffering from a chronic shortage of memory so I took the opportunity to perform security updates on the server. The service was running since March and so hasn’t performed too badly. Hope to upgrade to new hardware soon which means increased memory allowance.

Service upgrades, Saturday 5th March

I will be upgrading some back-end services on Sat 5th March from about 10am. This will impact the Jabber service. I’m unsure how long this will take, but at worst I hope to have this back up again by 2pm.

Upgrading to ejabberd 2.1

Having tested Ejabberd 2.1 I expect to be migrating over to this at some point in the near future. It’s possible I will just do this when the ejabberd process crashes, but will update this blog entry with the latest news.

This upgrade should not require you to change anything, but it is possible that you may need to re-register with transports.

[Updated 12:40 27/01/2011] Server is down, migration work is underway.

[Updated 13:15 27/01/2011] Switchover to ejabberd 2.1 has completed and you should be able to log in again now.

[Updated 13:55 27/01/2011] Server experienced a few hiccups that have been fixed. All should be right again.

Stability issues & upgrades

Service stability:
I’ve been having some issues with the stability of the server, this seems to be down to the connection between ejabberd and the database server (were user accounts are kept). I’ve been unable to resolve this problem but I have been doing my best to keep an eye on the server

Software upgrades:
The version of ejabberd & Debian I have been using have both been superseded and I have been in the process of testing both. I am currently testing both as well migration between versions and hope to be in a position to switch to updated versions soon. When this time comes I will, of course, let people know via this blog and Jabber MOTD.

Jabber Server down

The Jabber server was down for a prolonged period due to the daemon crashing. This wasn’t caught and restarted automatically and I was absent from the internet until just now. It is up once again and I’ll be trying to make sure such a thing is caught next time.

MSN Transport Offline

The MSN Transport is currently offline and will be for a while. It has been causing problems with overutilising bandwidth and an I am investigating for a possible fix.

Update: 2:00pm – Have patched MSN-Transport with possible fix. Transport is up, but may be taken down if there is a problem.

DNS Issues

We experienced some DNS issues this morning which meant that users were unable to contact other off-site Jabber/XMPP contacts. This has now been resolved and should be working.
